The third-generation M1 Abrams tank is the backbone of the US Army and Marine Corps armored divisions. The Abrams features heavy armor (it is one of the world's heaviest combat vehicles) and the adoption of the powerful multi-fuel turbine engine. Great attention has been paid to crew protection, thanks to a separate, heavily protected ammunition depot.  The M1 Abrams, which entered operational service in the early 1980s to replace the M-60, features a sophisticated fire-control system and modern armor.  Initially armed with a 105 mm cannon, it was later fitted with a more modern and powerful 120 mm smoothbore gun, capable of firing a different variety of projectiles. The Abrams has been widely used, with deadly effectiveness, in all major theaters of operation, from the Middle East to Afghanistan, and has proved superior to any other enemy tank.
