Product description : Ship model: Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier

The history of Charles de Gaulle begins in 1974, the year when the oil crisis shook the industrialized countries. In this context, the French government decided to launch the construction of the PH-75, a 16,400 t helicopter carrier equipped with nuclear heating systems to replace the R-95 Arromanches aircraft carrier which had just been condemned after thirty years of service. on all the seas of the world. The choice of nuclear energy for the propulsion of the ship then demonstrates the will of the French government to maintain an independent foreign policy, particularly in the energy field. It offers the vessel the possibility of staying longer at sea without needing to refuel. The economic crisis and the procrastination on the equipment and missions of this unit lead to the postponement and then to the abandonment of the project. It was then decided to modernize the R-98 Clémenceau and the R-99 Foch to extend their careers in the ranks of the French Navy. Nevertheless, in 1982, the Superior Council of the Navy asked that the studies carried out for the propulsion of the PH-75 (which in the meantime became PA-75 then PA-83) be used to define a new generation of aircraft carriers capable of replacing the Clémenceau and the Foch before the end of the century. More than 10,000 plans were then drawn up by engineers from the Department of Naval Construction (DCN). The first unit provided for under the 1984-1988 programming law receives the name of Richelieu. February 4, 1986 the construction of the renamed Charles de Gaulle ship is finally authorized.
