In 1940, after World War II broke out, the United States General Staff ordered various factories to design a lightweight multi-purpose vehicle with four-wheel drive. The Willys company was chosen after an initial mintage of 1,500 vehicles, went into mass production in early 1941 and reached a total production of 640,000 units. This shows that the Jeep was the most widely produced light vehicle in the war industry during World War II.
