Product description : Model tank LEOPARD 1 A3 / A4 German main battle tank 1978

The Leopard 1 Tank is a German second generation main battle tank. In 1956, the Bundeswehr initiated a process to acquire a modern combat tank to replace its American armored vehicles (M-47 and M-48) in order to gain an advantage in terms of armor and firepower against the numerical superiority of Soviet tanks. The resulting specifications provide that the armor must withstand 20 mm shots at close range, that the gun can send ammunition capable of piercing 150 mm of armor with an endowment of these ammunition according to the NATO standard. In 1957, a cooperation agreement was signed with France with a view to acquiring a common combat tank, an agreement to which Italy joined in 1958 and supervised the program. Prototypes are built (two Germans and one French) and, between August and October 1963, they are compared to the advantage it seems of German prototypes. At the end of 1963, the agreement was broken by the parties, the French preferring to build their own version (the AMX-30), and the Italians preferring to buy the first version of the American M60 tank. The Germans then called their best prototype "Leopard" (in the continuity of the "Panther" and the "Tiger") and serial production by the German firm Krauss-Maffei and the Krupp group began at the end of 1965. The battle of Saraci-Kalesija in Bosnia which pitted a unit of the Danish armed forces of UNPROFOR against the Bosnian Serbs in 1994 was its baptism of fire. the French preferring to build their own version (the AMX-30), and the Italians preferring to buy the first version of the American M60 tank.
