The First Standard Tank of the IDF. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) was created twelve days after Israel's declaration of independence. Originally equipped with infantry weapons, they were subsequently equipped with M4 Sherman tanks. The Sherman offered a good compromise between firepower, protection, mobility and mechanical reliability. In addition, 50,000 copies having been produced during WWII, many machines and spare parts were available in surplus and broken after the conflict. After serving with distinction in many conflicts, the Sherman whose design dated back to WWII was showing its age and the IDFs retired from service in 1980, most of which were sold in Chile.
