Heavy cruiser of the "New Orleans" class, it was the second ship of the United States Navy named after the city of San Francisco. It participated in many battles during the Second World War. The construction of the "San Francisco" began September 9, 1931 at the shipyards of Mare Island, Vallejo, Calif.; launched March 9, 1933; and commissioned February 10, 1934 under the command of Captain Royal E. Ingersoll.
