Product description : Ship model: French battleship Richelieu 1943

The Richelieu was a French battleship built in 1935 and named in honor of Cardinal Richelieu. It is one of the last two giant warships that France has owned: the Richelieu, the Jean Bart. He left for Dakar on June 18, 1940 while German aircraft bombed the harbor, where it was being completed (up to 90%). In Dakar, the ship was torpedoed by the British during Operation "Catapult". A torpedo pierced a tunnel of the propeller shaft (it ran aground on a shoal, from the rear). The ship was summarily repaired. At the end of 1942, he left for the United States where his weaponry was modernized at the Brooklyn arsenal, the passage under the Brooklyn Bridge in New York having required the dismantling of the front telepointer. He received the notable addition of 20 and 40 mm Bofors anti-aircraft guns. After crossing the Suez Canal, the ship arrived on April 10, 1944 at Trincomalee, in the island of Ceylon, where it was received by the British fleet, then participated in the bombardments on Sabang on April 19 and Surabaya. He was present at the Japanese surrender in the harbor of Singapore. Finally, on October 1, he was back in Toulon after 52 months spent away from the Metropolis. After the Second War, he took part in the Indochina War. She was put in reserve in August 1959, decommissioned in 1967 then demolished in La Spezia in 1968.
