Ship model: Battleship USS BB-60 Alabama - Trumpeter

The USS Alabama is one of four "South Dakota" class battleships built during World War II. It was launched on February 16, 1942. It first served with its sister ship the USS "South Dakota" (BB-57), with the British fleet in the North Atlantic, serving as a convoy escort. In August 1943 he was sent to the Pacific where he served in many roles. He accompanied the aircraft carriers as an anti-aircraft escort, downing 22 suicide bombers. Its 16-inch guns provided artillery support during landings on the Marshall Islands, Saipan, and Japan itself. In 1962 Alabama was withdrawn from active service. The state of Alabama acquired it for use as a memorial and transported it to Mobile, Alabama. In September 1964 it was placed on the cradle it currently occupies and was opened to the public on January 9, 1965.
